Hoof Care Basics

Having healthy hooves helps your horse live a healthy life. That’s why proper hoof care is so important. All horses have different hoof types, whether they are brittle, soft, fast or slow growing. There are hundreds of hoof care products on the market, but here are some of my favorites.

Supplements

The main ingredient in most hoof supplements is biotin. Not only does it promote faster hoof growth, but it will also result in healthier new growth and has the added bonus of improving coat condition. One of my preferred hoof supplements is Horseshoer’s Secret which has 25 mg of biotin per serving and is alfalfa-based making it highly palatable for picky eaters. Another favorite is Farrier’s Formula. This Supplement is specifically designed for horses with brittle hooves that are prone to cracking. It is formulated to stimulate fast hoof growth, allowing cracks to “grow out” without spreading or worsening.

Hoof Hardeners

Horses with brittle hooves can also benefit greatly from the use of a hoof hardener. What I use to help my thoroughbred is Happy Horse Essential Hoof Hardener. It has a base of copal gum, a natural resin. When it hardens on the hoof, it reinforces the hoof wall, filling and sealing any cracks to prevent further damage. This hoof hardener can be used daily on the outside of the hoof. A different kind of hoof hardener can be used to prevent bruising. Keratex, in addition to strengthening the hoof wall, can be applied to the hoof sole. this provides protection to barefoot or soft-soled horses who are prone to bruising.

Hoof Conditioners

Hoff conditioners are great to use on all hoof types. They moisturize the coronet to promote healthy new growth and the hoof wall to improve elasticity and prevent cracking. My favorite hoof conditioner, and the one recommended by my farrier, is SOUND Hoof. In addition to conditioning, it also serves as a waterproofer. If hooves absorb too much water, they. become spongy. For this reason, this hoof conditioner is especially beneficial for use before bathing or for horses living in very wet environments.
